Message from the Chair

Brrr! An early winter has descended on New England this year! Snow and ice are everywhere, and it’s cold outside. Let’s hope Mother Nature manages to show us some mercy during the third week of February!

Speaking of which—here is a summary of the key issues discussed at the latest meeting of the Newport MLA Meeting’s Local Arrangements Committee hosted by Ned Quist at Brown University on December 7.

Construction has begun on the new parking facility at the Hyatt Hotel and the renovation of the “Captain’s Quarters” wing is underway. The hotel vans will be used for a variety of purposes—transporting persons from the Visitor’s Center on Tuesday and Wednesday, from the alternate Marriott Hotel to the Hyatt, taking groups to dinner on Thursday and Friday nights (the hotel will provide a sign-up sheet), and helping with transport to Friday night’s concert and St. John’s Church. Ned reports that the Marriott Hotel is a lovely facility recently renovated and smartly decorated. A restaurant will also be available there for those choosing to breakfast at the Marriott. As we have seen from recent postings on MLA-L, hotel reservations seem to be going very well.

Sheila Hogg reported that all the musical acts are firmed up. A reminder that the tickets for the Friday night concert were omitted from the mailed registration form, but are available on the online form or a print-out of the revised form. She is sending press kit materials to Michael Rogan.

Joe Scott will be hosting the “stuffing party” on February 11 at 10:00 a.m. at UConn in Storrs. I fondly remember the stuffing party for the 1998 Boston meeting. It was great fun. Amy Harrell reported that she has set up a blog on the meeting Web site and is willing to invite anyone on the Local Arrangements Committe to be an author. Marlene Wong is organizing the organ crawl.

Catherine Gick is continuing to work on the restaurant list and will take charge of making a restaurant map for the transportation bulletin board (which the hotel will set up at the registration desk) to accompany the van sign-up sheet.

Pam Bristah reported that the total number of registrants for all three tours remains low. She is continuing to post weekly reminders on MLA-L. She suggested that local arrangement committee members (and any other NEMLA members) post glowing letters to MLA-L to encourage people to sign up for the tours.

Alan Karass will be scheduling the crew to greet attendees at the Visitor’s Center. Ned noted that we have a potential volunteer form the Naval War College—its volunteer music librarian.

Fundraising continues to progress, and if all pledged monies are received, NEMLA will be able to fund food for the Thursday evening for the Local Arrangements concert.

Pam Bristah will host the January meeting (either the 11th or 25th) at Wellesley College.

We all owe a huge thanks to Ned for his enthusiastic commitment to making every aspect of the Local Arrangements Committee hum in perfect tune.

Kudos are also in order to Pat Fisken, who has taken on the temporary role of Secretary–Treasurer with great dedication. She has done a marathon job of rectifying all of our membership records, and has set up these and our financial records in reliable electronic formats that can easily be passed on to her successor. Pat has also conveyed to me your requests for membership on various committees. I will soon be reviewing these offers and be in touch with the volunteers. This will enable our committees to be fully constituted before the spring meeting, which will take place early this year on Monday, March 17, 2008 at Tufts University's new Granoff Center for the Arts. Michael Rogan will be our host. I attended the opening ceremony of the center at Tufts last year, and it is a superb facility. You will also have the opportunity to visit Michael’s brand new music library. I hope that you will plan now to attend. Alec McLane is program chair for this meeting.

I am both happy and sad to bid Abby Cross, our superb newsletter editor, a fond farewell from New England. Her husband has accepted a position in Washington, D.C., and she will join him there this June. We will sorely miss Abby’s dedication to NEMLA and her infectious enthusiasm for music librarianship. We trust, however, that our loss will be the Atlantic Chapter’s gain. We are now seeking volunteers to take on this essential work for NEMLA. Nominations should be sent to Ned Quist, as should nominations for all the officers that will be on ballot (Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect, Secretary–Treasurer, and Member at Large) in the upcoming newsletter.

Fall Meeting Report
New England Music Library Association
Hyatt Regency-Newport, RI
October 23, 2007

Those who were able gathered Monday, October 22nd to partake of sustenance at local establishments in the spirit of providing opinions to those coming to Newport in February. In a continuing effort, we gathered again for liquid refreshment and conversations after dinner.

The meeting itself provided attendees with the opportunity to tour the conference facilities and various hotel amenities. This was followed by updates from local arrangements, tours, fundraising, and other committees as well as discussion on the pre-conference. Lunch was followed by presentations on “American Popular Music in the Post-modern Age” provided by Sandy Brooks (Eastern Connecticut State University), Emily Ferrigno (Wesleyan University) and Lee Bryars (Berklee College of Music). Meeting was adjourned around 3:30.

MLA Newport Fundraising Report
Contributed by Linda Solow Blotner for the Fundraising Committee

NEMLA’s Fundraising Committee is pleased to report that 15 chapter members have donated a total of $1,770.00 toward the upcoming MLA meeting in Newport, Rhode Island. Their support is greatly appreciated as the chapter prepares to welcome  over 500 music librarians, publishers, and other music vendors from across the country to this meeting.  The really good news is that it is not too late to make your donation.  As MLA Development Officer Paula Matthews reminded us at our October chapter meeting in Newport, no amount is too small. Through MLA’s new $5 campaign all members are encouraged to participate in MLA’s fundraising efforts.  Donating to the Newport meeting—hosted by NEML—is a great way to get started!  There are a variety of opportunities to support this meeting, for example:

CASH DONATIONS

   * Benefactors:  $1,000 or more                                * Patrons: $500-$999
   * Contributors: $300-$499                                        * Friends: $151-$299
   * Supporters:    $150 or less

No donation is too small, and all will be acknowledged in the conference program book.  Please make your check payable to “Music Library Association” and mail it to:  Linda Solow Blotner, 203 Deercliff Road, Avon, CT 06001.  If you would like to sponsor a particular event or activity, please let us know and we can provide you with more information.

DONATED ITEMS

We would also welcome free items that you can donate.  These items could be appropriate for the popular silent auction or as prizes awarded during the meeting. Please contact me for details.

Thank you again for your interest in and support of MLA’s Newport 2008 conference.  We look forward to the wonderful experience for music librarians across the continent that your donation will support.

Maria Jane Loizou sang in a Duo-Abend in Augsburg Germany on the occasion of J. S. Bach's Todestag (July 28th). The concert was given at the Stadtpfarrkirche St. Moritz, and selections from J. S. Bach, Franck, Saint-Saens, and D. Pinkham were offered. Despite the pouring rain, there was a good crowd, and the concert got a good review, too!

Martin Schreiner's Suite for String Quartet (Seasons) has just been published by Frank E. Warren Music Service.

Laura Dankner (retired, Loyola University, New Orleans) is now working part-time as a Cataloging and Circulation Librarian at the Williamstown Public Library in Williamstown, MA.

Diane Napert is now working at Yale University under a Mellon grant, cataloging historical sound recordings (78s).
